NES Remix
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Indieszero

Nintendo games historically have been prime for people to hack. Homebrew versions Zelda and Mario and many Nintendo franchises have always been the mainstay across the Internet. The Wii also enjoyed an exciting second life with an amazing Homebrew channel. Not to mention I’ve recently been enjoying Project M a Mod for Super Smash Brawl to make it more like Melee and 64. But now Nintendo’s decided to take on the reins of messing with their old titles themselves or allowing someone else (Indieszero) to do it.

NES Remix can be a little hard to explain. If you’re familiar with the Wario Ware Games it has a similarity in presentation, but at its core it takes some classic NES titles and tweaks them and combining them in interesting ways.

The game offers individual game modes for most of NES title available. The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Brothers, Excitebike and many more are there for your enjoyment with unique challenge that range for easy to insane. You unlock more games by competing in these challenges.

Some examples of challenges are: complete a Super Mario level without while running full speed or in Zelda you need to find all the passageway in set amount of time. As you beat each level you get awarded stars and sometimes stamps. Stars and other factors get points and the more points unlock more level more levels and more games etc.

Also included are 50 remix levels which give a very interesting challenges and also combined some games. Like playing Donkey Kong as Link with the inability to jump or pick up a hammer. Some of these challenges are just not fun. In fact some of them are really difficult and could create extreme rage filled moments of delight or horror depending on what you are in to.

The game is not without some problems. The controls on the U-Pad are okay and of course off TV play is always great, but they do to take some adjusting when playing a few of the games. It’s just being completely used to playing the games on NES controller.

Some of the challenges can be very very difficult to get 3 stars and if you’re prone to rage this might not be the best title for you to play. Another fault in the game is no true multiplayer option of any kind. It’s fun to pass the controller back and forth but no two player option no online or even in game arcade like name input leader-board or anything like that. And with some of the games like Mario Brothers and Balloon fight which had two player options in the original tittle the lack of 2 player option is noticeable.

There is also a Bonus mode. After you get to a certain point mark or stars and unlock all the games Bonus mode starts being unlocked. Bonus mode gives you a few more remix type levels and a few other NES games that are thrown in there one of which being NES Baseball. A game I played way too much as a kid and have amazing skill at. In fact, I challenge anybody in the world right now to a game!

Anyways I feel like some of the titles chosen were the best possible NES games. Who the hell wanted to play Clu Clu Land ever again. I know I didn’t. Games like Punch Out, Metroid and Kid Icarus were very much missing. I hope to see some (Free) DLC for this in the future or a sequel. Everyone is also saying this but this opens up another great franchise for Nintendo if they continue down this road and make more remix type games with Snes, Nintendo 64 and GameCube titles. Not to mention the Gameboy and the DS library would be great to see for the 3DS. I think this has to happen.

NES Remix is a cool compilation that pushes old-school Nintendo titles to new hights and lets you get really frustrated by them all over again. I love what Nintendo is doing with this title and hope to see a lot of other unique E shop titles on the Wii U as they have done with the 3DS.

If you are a pure fan of old school NES titles and you want to really challenge yourself and play these games like never had before this is the game to download. WARNING you may have a few rage quits along the way and have an urge to toss the gamepad across the like a frisbee.

I think Nintendo is thinking creatively and outside the box with Remix. The game really gives old school players that have been going at these games since they first got that little gray box and new players a unique look. The later parts of this game get very difficult and no matter how many times you played these games in the past it offers fresh new perspective and challenge.

NES Remix

$15 Nintendo E-shop
9 of 10

It’s hard to quantify what I love so much about Super Mario 3D World. The most obvious single word that comes to mind when thinking about the game is fun. But this Mario game has certain elements that really create an unique play style and caused some lasting memories that I haven’t quite felt in a Mario game since first grabbing a magic leaf and becoming a flying raccoon.

So here are a few of my favorite things in Super Mario 3D World:

Meow:

The catsuit is my favorite Mario power-up perhaps ever. When picking it up you get the ability to climb up walls and you get a scratch attack. This allows you to tackle each level in a completely unique way than you have before. Being able to climb around lets you approach the completing of the level uniquely. This created an appreciation on how dense each each level is in Mario World 3D.

I feel like this power-up was perhaps created to allow players to have the antigravity/climbing on walls feel of the Galaxy games without having to have a game set in space. This necessity ended up equaling a lot of fun for the player. My hope is this is not just a one-shot Mario Item for the this game it should be carried over to future games as well.

Working multiplayer:

New for the the “New” Super Mario Brothers Wii and also included in “New” Super Mario Brothers Wii U was an attempt to implement multiplayer. I say attempt because usually it was just a mess with one player leading the way while everyone else died a lot and arguing ensued.

Super Mario 3D World 3-D environment really allows multiplayer to feel more natural and everyone can feel like part of the game. The game feels fun as hell single player or multiplayer it becomes even better. Also certain aspects were added to the game with the Crown mode and other competitive options to create more of a rivalry between players. This is the first Mario game that I would highly suggest playing multiplayer.

The Characters from Super Mario Bros 2 (USA):

I have a fond memory of when Super Mario Bros 2 came out and loving the fact that I can switch between the four characters. This feature is something that has been absent from every Main Mario since. But finally in Super Mario 3D World they bring back this option back. This really opens up gameplay even know the abilities are not quite as pronounced as in Mario 2.. There are also certain areas you need to use certain characters whitch does add a great deal of replayability to each level. Also in multiplayer this is great as each each of your characters have different talents so you need to work together to get the stars quickly and finish the level the best.

Subtlety:

Super Mario 3D World is jam-packed with references to Mario history not to mention a few other references to other Nintendo Franchises. Little things as well like when you run really fast a smoke cloud comes up behind you can create some immersion. You can also jump in Koopa shells and when you’re underwater you can see your character holding their breath. All these nice little touches add more of a sense of ownership of the world. If this is what Nintendo can do when right now in their first attempts into high-definition video games I can’t wait to see what they do next.

I remember when Pac-Man was the most important video game character in the world. In reality, I was always a bit more of a fan of Ms. Pac-Man, the game, because it had more levels and an actual storyline. No doubt though Pac-Man was the man. He had his own cartoon, pinball games, toys and several titles of video games that used the Pac-Man family. My personal favorite was Super Pac-Man with the magic power pellet that turned you into a giant Super Pac-Man the covered most of the screen and destroyed everything in your path.

As I mentioned there was a TV show that I was a fan of at the time. It was the standard 80’s format television cartoon that pit the villains (the ghosts) versus the good guys (Pac-Man and his family). A similar setup as G.I. Joe, WWF and many others.

Sorry for the sidebar but this is relevant because I guess there is a new animated show about Pac-Man for kids that I have never seen or heard of before. And this game Pac-Man and The Ghostly Adventures is based on the show. This was unknown to me when picking up this title. I imagined this being some standard mini game collection with a lot of Pac-Man oriented party games. What I found was a platforming game thats gameplay is surprisingly deep for a licensed title. There are clever and interesting ways to maneuver your way through Pac-Man’s world. The game at times can feel a little bit easy and maybe a bit rushed but it’s a fun title at a good price point of $40.

Pac-Man and The Ghostly Adventures is a platforming game in a 3-D environment in the same vein as Mario 64. Pac-Man wanders around each level interacting with many of the characters from the television show and jumping from platform to platform eating ghosts and pretty much anything else he can find. By doing this he finds a myriad of power-ups along the way. These power-ups are really fun. One example is an ice ability that allows you to freeze ghosts or other elements like water fountains to kill things within the world and complete the levels. There is also a main hub where you can unlock mini video games that feel very arcade like. While in the hub you can also walk around and talk to a bunch of the characters I assume from the show.

The game is a fun action platform game with one of my favorite video game mascots in history but it does have some problems. Jumping is a huge problem being very unforgiving. It almost feels like a Nintendo 64 game sometimes. This game feels a bit rushed like it needed some more time in testing. Perhaps it was rushed to capitalize on the success of cartoon and needing be on a time schedule. But I think they could’ve had something really special here if they had spent a little bit more time polishing and tweaking to make the “platforming” as fun as eating stuff.

Pac-Man and The Ghostly Adventures is a decent game that for $40 price point and is worth picking up at some point. Especially after the rush of Nintendo Wii U games come out there will most certainly be a price cut. The game can surprise you with how fun it can be at times but the jumping can be very frustrating and the boss fights don’t offer a lot of depth. I don’t see myself ever going back to replay this title but it does have some charm on the first run though. Perhaps I’ll check out the cartoon and if they spend a little bit more time perfecting what they got here they may have a decent grounds for a sequel.

Pac-Man in the ghostly adventures

6 out of 10

It’s over and has been a good ride.

Nintendo Japan and Europe finally made it official this week something has been talked about a lot over the last couple months that the production is over for the Nintendo Wii. It’s an end to a console that made a big difference when it first we was released in 2006. It seems that Nintendo USA is the only hold out.

Before being released it was called “Revolution.” Personally I think they should of kept the name because it does properly describes the impact of the Wii. When the first game play videos were shown I really did not know what to expect. Nintendo did though. In 2005 there was all sorts of hype coming out from them about how this would revolutionize gaming and bring people of all ages to play together. They easily succeeded.

The Wii is easy to look down on now partly because of this past generation being one of the longest and it bringing out the Wii’s weakness. A lot of the best games of the generation were not able to be ported over to the Wii system and if they were it was a more cartoony versions or features were taken out. But when the Wii was first released it had quite a big pull in the industry

And not just with gamers. It was one of those systems that broke barriers down and converted people that hadn’t played video games in many years. It also became the buzz toy for a while. Some people would just piuck up a Wii and not even know what they were getting.

The Wii with its motion controls influence the other two companies ,as is usual, Nintendo innovates when others replicate.

The Wii was a great system. Online wasn’t perfect, the graphics were not HD but the games that work on the system were extremely fun and help usher in an era of new gamers. So as Nintendo Japan and Europe close the door on the Wii and looks to the Wii U let us hope that when the game started hitting the shelves the U can get some of that success and sell the brand again. Now Nintendo USA wake up
